Your Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive

Saturday 6th July: Milan

On arrival to the city that is the financial and fashion capital of Italy, transfer to the hotel and have the time to unpack and prepare you bike the week of riding ahead.

This is a free day in Milan if you arrive early. In the evening we will meet for an apperitivi followed by some great food down by the canals in old part of Milan.

Day 2

Sunday 7th July: Milan to Bobbio

116km - 1500m Climbing

It’s a leisurely start for the trip out of Milan and being a Sunday, it will be quiet with little traffic and lots of cyclists heading out of the city.

The day starts in front of the cathedral for the great Instagram moment. We then leave Milan via the Roman ruins in San Lorenzo and out alongside the canal system that was used to build Milan.  The riding is easy as we head out on the the flat lands that run down to the Po river and the city of Pavia. We will stop for coffee in Pavia and a quick look at the centre.

After this we head into the wine hills south of Pavia and start to climb upwards on rolling terrain and our destination of the ancient town of Bobbio.

You will have time to freshen up before a well earned dinner all washed down by some good local wine (this will no doubt be the recurring theme most evenings!)

Day 3

Monday 8th July: Bobbio to Levanto

128km - 2100m climbing.
You wake up and know that with a few hours riding we will be on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and riding the rolling hills of Cinque Terre, with its amazing sea views and isolated villages.

We leave Bobbio and start heading west down the valley and over the mountains that will take us to Setre Levante and the sea.

Lunch in Setre and a chance to paddle in the water. We climb out of Setre on the road that is cut into the hills directly above the sea as we ride to our destination that is the coastal village of Levanto.

Day 4

Tuesday 9th July: Levanto - Cinque Terre to Lucca

117km - 1800m climbing

Breakfast over looking the sea is how we start the day. We leave Levanto and are again riding the road high above the sea

We are heading to the coastal town of La Spezia from where we pick up the pan flat road down the coast alongside the sandy beaches. At Lido di Camiore we turn east inland where we start to climb the hills on the rolling road to Lucca.

Lucca is a wonderful old walled Tuscan town that has a charm that very few forget. Your accommodation tonight is in a architecturally renovated nineteenth century building with a pool which has had a long history including serving as tobacco drying warehouse, a cotton weaving mill, a church after the second world war, a cinema, then ballroom and even a garage.

Day 5

Wednesday 10th July: Lucca

Rest day

Enjoy the beach!

Day 6

Thursday 11th July: Lucca to Siena

118km - 2100m climbing

The road from Lucca is initially flat as we cut south, before long we are into the Val di Cecina valley and on the road to our lunch stop, Volterra, an ancient walled roman city perched high above the valley below.

From Volterra we head east and ride the rolling roads to Siena, passing through small villages, olive groves and vineyards - the roads are testing but at the same time the views are stunning.

We arrive at Siena and climb up the Via Fontebranda climb that decides the winner in the Strade Bianchi bike race every year

Get to the top and we buy the beers in the Piazza del Campo square!

Day 7

Friday 12th July: Siena to Bolsena

128km - 1900m climbing

Today we will be heading off the tarmac and onto some of the famous white gravel (weather permitting) in the rolling hills of Tuscany as we head to our coffee stop of the morning in Radi.

We leave Radi and continue to head south along the road that gives spectacular views across the area and takes us to the base of the climb to Montalcino - the home of one of the most famous Tuscan wines and our lunch stop.

Once loaded with food and drink we will then head south down rolling hills to Acquapendente and the lake at Bolsena
